Human Dignity in a Post-Human World

Yesterday, our church observed Sanctity of Life Sunday (a bit early due to our church’s involvement with the G3 Conference this week).  For the 2017 Sanctity of Life Sunday, we welcomed Scott Klusendorf, president of Life Training Institute to our church and our pulpit.  You can hear his full sermon as he pointed out the biblical, logical, and moral fallacies of the pro-choice movement.

Sad Birthday Roe v Wade

Sad Birthday Roe v Wade

As we live, we celebrate many different dates.  We celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, dates of employment, cancer-free dates, and many other days on our calendar each year.  Sunday, January 22nd, was one day that many people celebrate while others see it as a sad birthday in American history – the anniversary of Roe v Wade – January 22nd 1973.

It was on that day when Roe won a controversial decision in a 7-2 majority that changed the landscape of American history.  That decision alone opened the door for the freedom to kill unborn children by calling it “a woman’s right to choose” and protecting it under the Constitution of the United States.  Rather than just hammering abortion by calling it a sin (which is the truth according to Exodus 20:13), why should we oppose abortion in America?  Why should Americans rethink abortion and be willing to change our mind about this hotly debated issue?

REASON #1 – The Issue of God

God is the beginning and end of all things.  We should view life from the perspective of God as center and supreme.  We exist because of God, and we will continue to exist in eternity because of God.  God is the source of all creation (Genesis 1-2) and one of the reasons that the secular culture refuses to admit that abortion is wrong is because they have a skewed view of God.  If God is creator and sovereign ruler of the entire universe, it goes without saying that all of humanity will stand before God and give account of our lives.  One reason people support abortion is because they deny the existence of God (Psalm 14:1) – or they deny His absolute sovereignty over all things at all times (Philippians 2:5-11).  One reason that we should change our mind about abortion in America is because of the absolute reality that it displeases God.  If God was angry with Cain when he killed his brother Able – imagine how He feels about the abortion industry in America and around the world?  John Piper said:

The root cause of abortion is the failure to be satisfied in God as our supreme love. And, for all the great legal work that needs to be done to protect human life, the greatest work that needs to be done is to spread a passion – a satisfaction for the supremacy of God in all things. That’s our calling.

REASON #2 – The Issue of Life

In America we have been extremely blessed with technological advancement and achievement.  This advancement in knowledge and technology has allowed us to see cures to disease, information that has led to prevention of disease, and great milestones in the medical fields.  However, one great tragedy in our modern age is the fact that our politicians have pressed an agenda of ignorance rather than knowledge and truth related to abortion.  With 4D scans and other tests that are available, it can be easily proven that the “thing” inside a mother’s womb is an actual baby.  As early as 11 weeks, a fully formed baby can be seen in the womb.  Rather than believing the lie that from conception the baby is merely tissue that evolves into a living being at a certain stage – we must embrace the reality that from conception a baby is truly alive and deserves to be treated as a human being.

In a culture that fights for human rights in our own nation and around the world, why would we continue to refuse to take the lead in this area of humanitarianism?  Why would we as Americans change our mind about slavery but be unwilling to stand up for the rights of unborn humans?  Why would we be willing to call out the harsh treatment of women in foreign lands but be willing to advocate the execution of 138 babies every hour in America?  Why would we fight wars for human rights in Iraq and Afganistan, but be willing to keep the butchering of little unborn infants a free choice for women?  If we expect other countries to take us seriously on human rights, sex-slave trafficking, child labor laws, and the unjust treatment of women – we must change our mind about abortion.

Current Abortion Rate (as of 2012):

  • 1.21 Million Babies Killed Each Year (In America)
  • 3,315 Babies Each Day
  • 138 Babies Each Hour

REASON #3 – The Issue of Family

All throughout history, Satan has been on a brutal attack against the family.  He fostered the attack of Pharaoh against the Jewish babies in Egypt (see Exodus 2).  Satan pushed the attack of King Herod against the Jewish babies born around the same time as Jesus (see Matthew 2:16-18).  That same attack continues in our present day.  It surfaces history in brutality such as China’s strict “family planning policy” laws or through a decline in birth rate in America due to economic challenges and career planning.  The Satanic threat against the family is one that surfaces itself all throughout history and it continues to have a central platform in America through abortion.

  1. Why do we not see more Down Syndrome people in our communities?  FACT:  84-91% of all children diagnosed with Down Syndrome are killed by abortion before birth (Life Issues Connector).
  2. Why do we continue to see a decline in birthrate in America?  FACT:  30% of all babies conceived in America are killed by abortion (Exposing the Dark Work of Abortion – by: John Piper).
  3. FACT:  Adolescents aged 15–19 years accounted for 16.2% of all abortions in 2008 (CDC).
  4. FACT:  Every day 1,300 black babies are killed in America (When is Abortion Racism? – Sermon January, 2007 – John Piper).

REASON #4 – The Issue of Law

Do you find it strange that you can be prosecuted for the killing of a Bald Eagle, but a woman can go to a clinic and allow a doctor to kill her baby (while inside her womb) under the same banner of law that governs America?

Do you find it strange that Dr. Conrad Murray  was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the case of Michael Jackson’s death for giving Michael medicine, by request, that led to his death, but doctors several blocks away from that same house where Michael Jackson died were free to slaughter babies in a women’s clinic?

Do you find it strange that a DUI driver can be charged with a crime for killing an unborn child during an accident in 38 states in America but in each of those same 38 states the mother of that same baby could have killed it by abortion the day before the DUI accident occurred?

Do you find it strange that we as Americans oppose slavery and have laws that prevent us from purchasing another human being, but we will not fight to protect unborn babies in their mother’s womb?

Do you find it strange that a mother can drown her baby in the bathtub 11 weeks after giving birth and go to jail, but she can freely kill her 11 week old baby in her womb through abortion?  John MacArthur writes:

America, as a nation, is highly committed by law and by practice to a form of mass murder…. This nation, which certainly prides itself on its humanitarianism, is in a murderous cycle of violence that makes the Nazi Holocaust look mild by comparison. Nearly 2,000,000 babies are aborted a year in America. Every third baby conceived now is being murdered. Among teenage women there are 736 abortions for every 1,000 births. Among married women abortions now exceed births! More babies are killed than are born. Some would tell us that there is an abortion about every 15 seconds in America.

We view the Nazi Holocaust as an evil act of brutality and senseless murder of human beings.  We view the 9-11 attacks as a violent act of terror that has crushed families, bankrupt businesses, and changed the skyline of an American city forever.  We stand opposed to the brutal treatment of women and children around the world.  We must abort abortion and be willing to lay aside pride.  That is exactly what we had to do with slavery in America.  That is exactly what we must do with abortion in America.  The scars of slavery still exist today in our country – imagine how many years it will take to unravel the scars of millions of babies being butchered under the banner of “a woman’s right to choose.”  We must choose life.  May God awaken America to this truth.

Slavery and Abortion – Two Historic Sins

Yesterday was “Sanctity of Life” Sunday and many prayers were lifted up to our God regarding the situation of abortion in America. As we consider the fact that 13.8 babies are killed in abortion every hour in America, that should cause us to shake with fear. What is most disturbing is that the abortions are not done in a back alley with a clothes hanger, but in a doctor’s office during a lunch hour, with laws providing freedom to exercise the act, and performed by doctors who are driving fine vehicles and living in large homes paid for by the blood of unborn children.

The Bible is very clear about the issue of life. God forms the child in the womb of the mother and for anyone to take that life away is exactly the same as taking the life of a 30 year old man. There is no difference. America can call it choice, but God calls it sin. Organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the National Organization of Women can call it “Choice” or “Women’s Rights” but God calls is murder. It is time for America to stop abortion and lead the way in the world rather than continuing to embrace actions that are extremely embarrassing and extremely harmful for unborn children.

What does the Bible say?

Consider Jeremiah 1:5: Jeremiah had been called by God to be a prophet unto the nations. His role was to preach a message of judgment and call the nation of Judah to repentance. It was during the call of Jeremiah that we see the sanctity of human life revealed clearly. Notice the words of Holy Scripture:

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, [and] I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

The word translated, “formed” is the Hebrew word, “yatsar” meaning that God formed and fashioned Jeremiah in his mother’s womb at conception like a potter forms and fashions clay. It is important to see that God is the origin of all life. If we tamper with that we are tampering with God. It is the command of our God that nobody should take life.

Consider Exodus 20:13: Thou shalt not kill. This is not an option. This is not a suggestion. This is the Word and the command of God – the Creator and Origin of life. Therefore, for any individual to make a choice to take the life of an unborn baby is to clearly violate the command of God.

What does history say?

All throughout history we see embarrassing things that come back to haunt a nation. Specific sins that were committed that bring much hurt and harm to future generations. Consider the history of slavery in America. Many people suffered and were under mistreatment during that time – and it was all done legally. The slave industry was a big industry which was directly connected to the farm industry in America. It was legal. People had rights. People exercised their rights. It was under those laws and during the exercise of free rights that people suffered, and generations to follow are left with scars and embarrassment regarding those practices.

Undoubtedly, if our President-Elect Barack Obama would view the abortion industry and laws in America in the same way that he views the slave industry from American history, he would change his position on abortion. Maybe on this historic day of civil rights known as Martin Luther King day the heart of Barack Obama could be opened to see the similarities of slavery and abortion. There is not much difference between the slave industry and abortion. The only difference is that multitudes more suffer and die through abortion in America than the slave industry and all of the American war deaths combined. The change that Obama should bring to America is the protection and upholding of the right to live rather than continuing a barbaric practice of legalized murder under the heading of “Women’s Rights.”

What all Christians should do?

1. Pray for Barack Obama. The Bible says, “The king’s heart [is] in the hand of the LORD, [as] the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will” (Proverbs 21:1). Therefore, God can change the heart of Barack Obama. Both Andrew Johnson and James Garfield placed their hand on Proverbs 21 during their inauguration ceremony. It would be wonderful if Barack Obama would place his hand on Jeremiah 1 and then explain that his position has already changed on the subject of little babies who are in their mother’s womb.

2. Tell the Truth. Abortion is Murder and it is time to stand up and let the truth be heard.

3. Point People to Christ. God is merciful upon all those who call upon His name in repentance. It is important for all Christians to support biblical counseling, Christ-centered, pro-life facilities that can provide information to women considering abortion and women who have already had an abortion. People need to know what God says rather than what politicians or organizations think about abortion.

4. Support Adoption. If Christians were proactive in the process of abortion and adoption, countless homes could be filled with potentially aborted children who were saved. What often prevents parents from being able to adopt and save the life of an unborn child is money. The system is so complex today that much legal fees are necessary to adopt. This leaves some young couples paying in excess of $30,000 dollars to adopt a child. We should have a fund setup in the Southern Baptist Convention with thousands of dollars set aside for anyone who desires to adopt children. This would result in saving many lives and it would serve as a scholarship for parents who cannot afford adoption.

For the glory of God!
