In his article titled, Preaching Points: The Pull of the Punch Line” Dr. Hershael York, professor of preaching at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville argues that you should never tell a joke in your sermon.  He insists that “preachers should not tell jokes for one reason only: They don’t do it well. In fact, they do it badly.”
